Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai presents 'Earth' rooms this World Environment Day Together towards a better planet!
Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces has always been committed to giving back to community in which it operates and to help improve the quality of life by preserving the natural environment. The Earth Rooms at Vivanta by Taj-Connemara, Chennai is just one conscious step in this direction.
In keeping with the hotel's 'vintage cool' persona infused by the effervescent Vivanta brand of service, Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai has five Earth Rooms spread across different categories with the primary focus on making accommodation less taxing on the environment. Small but significant changes have been made that go a long way to make these rooms more eco-friendly and also help guests become more conscious about the environment.
Efficiency is the key
Starting from the beautifully-handmade natural wooden logo on the door, there is a keen sense of clever design to maximise usage with minimum wastage. The lighting, for instance, is provided by not just eco-friendly energy-efficient CFL, but the illumination is intelligently planned to cut down wastage through excessive lumen. These rooms allow a lot of natural light in, making it convenient to use artificial lighting only when necessary. The air-conditioning is set at 24 degrees, two degrees higher than the usual setting to keep the room comfortably-cool but low-enough to reduce significant amount of power consumption spent on the central air-conditioning system.
The minibar, which draws significant power for refrigeration, has been removed from these rooms, though guests can order for specific items by dialing the in-room dining services. The bath and bed linen is changed on alternate days, thereby reducing the usage of laundry chemicals. Stationery like writing pads, envelopes, etc can be brought to the room on request, to help reduce the wastage of paper.
To encourage commitment to greener environment, the hotel offers loyalists, who choose to stay at Earth Rooms, an added 15 percent Taj InnerCircle points. According to Vijay Shrikent, General Manager, Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai, "The concept of an Earth Room is to introduce environmentally-friendly measures, without compromising on in-room guest experiences and our signature hospitality. Taj is one of Asia's largest group of hotels to commit to energy conservation and environmental management, and it is our constant endeavour to continue to build and sustain awareness amongst our discerning customers."

According to the Chinese legend, the moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day, and children try and spot the Moon Maiden to make their wishes come true. Under this bright autumn moon, friendships are made and renewed. This exciting play, inspired from Gandhi’s archived journals, will be staged on 27th April, 2012 at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai to support the expansion of Tata Medical Center, a comprehensive Cancer Care Center from the Tata Group at Kolkata.

Mrs. Geeta Gopalakrishnan, Director Donor Relationships of the Tata Medical Centersaid, “Though Mahatma Gandhi’s image is largely confined to posters in government offices, archives reveal a very contemporary side.” The performance on 27th April, 2012 in aid of Tata Medical Center is important as majority of the cancer patients registered in India come from the Eastern and North – Eastern parts of the country. It was Mr. Ratan Tata’s vision to provide world class cancer treatment to the underprivileged. It would be wonderful if Mumbaikars support this noble cause as the existing facilities at the hospital are not sufficient to deal with the influx of cancer patients from Eastern India.”

TMC is working towards offering a spectrum of services including prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation of the cancer patients. Rediscover the magic of the Mediterranean
To the Greeks, the word 'kefi' implies the spirit of joy, passion, enthusiasm and high spirits. Kefi at Taj Club House reflects these very emotions with its romantic ambience and the authentic Mediterranean cuisine. With an all-new menu and service experience, Kefi reinvents itself as the perfect dining destination - be it for an authentic meal from the Mediterranean, or for an unparalleled experience.
The highlight of the new menu is the introduction of Parillas or Spanish grills like bistec de solomillo, rib eye and fillete mignon, served with patatas de panadera con setas. The line-up also comprises contemporary cold mezzes - from hummus Bieruti to wark enab or Spanish escalivada topped with confit garlic rosemary, peppers and grilled prawns. An array of oven fresh breads and wraps - Manakeesh - are served with toppings like jibneh bil ajin (a savory strudel stuffed with veggies) and Halloumi cheese baked to crisp. The Lebanese grills include char grilled mixed grill platter and seafood platter, spiced ground lamb with Mediterranean spices, samak meshwi, fish char grilled and sultan kebab.
For maincourse, indulge in Aushak (leek ravioli), makaronia ke spanaki (Greek pasta), traditional tagine (bean or chicken), Chuletillas with double lamb rack, samak bil rimmam (a roulade of salmon with pomegranate reduction) and the all-time favourite, Yakneh sultan Ibrahim with braised shallots.
Add a Spanish and Turkish Twist to your meal with Mozaik - a crusty chocolate dessert or the traditional crema catalan from Spain. Of course, no Mediterranean mean ends without Baklava made with a choice of your favourite filling - pista, almond or walnut.
Soak in Kefi's rustic beauty as you dine under the stars with lilting Mediterranean music, an exotic menu, flowers, candle lights... everything that makes for a private, unobtrusive, magical evening.Hide

About The Taj West End
Penguin Books India and The Taj West End are proud to announce the launch of The magnificent new novel from the master storyteller
River of Smoke by Amitav Ghosh
The long-awaited second book in the spellbinding Ibis Trilogy
on 27th June 2011 at The Taj West End
Amitav Ghosh will read from River of Smoke
Three years after the internationally acclaimed beginning to his masterful epic, the Ibis Trilogy, with the Man Booker Prize - shortlisted Sea of Poppies, Amitav Ghosh returns with a spectacular novel depicting the further adventures of those aboard the Ibis. As the action moves to Canton in China in a fascinating build-up to the Opium Wars, the stories of known faces as well as a host of new characters are weaved together into what is one of the greatest works of historical fiction published in recent times.
In September 1838 a storm blows up on the Indian Ocean and the Ibis, a ship carrying a consignment of convicts and indentured labourers from Calcutta to Mauritius, is caught up in the whirlwind. When the seas settle, five men have disappeared-two lascars, two convicts and one of the passengers. Did the same storm upend the fortunes of those aboard the Anahita, an opium carrier heading towards Canton? And what fate befell those aboard the Redruth, a sturdy two-masted brig heading East out of Cornwall? Was it the storm that altered their course or were the destinies of these passengers at the mercy of even more powerful forces?
On the grand scale of an historical epic, River of Smoke follows its storm-tossed characters to the crowded harbours of China. There, despite efforts of the emperor to stop them, ships from Europe and India exchange their cargoes of opium for boxes of tea, silk, porcelain and silver. Among them are Bahram Modi, a wealthy Bombay merchant, his estranged half-Chinese son Ah Fatt, the orphaned amateur botanist Paulette and a motley collection of others in pursuit of romance, riches and a legendary rare flower. All struggle to cope with their losses-and, for some, unimaginable freedoms-in the alleys and crowded waterways of nineteenth-century Canton.
As transporting and mesmerizing as an opiate induced dream, River of Smoke, the second book in Amitav Ghosh's Ibis Trilogy, will be heralded as a masterpiece of twenty-first century literature.
The Bangalore launch of the book was hosted by the Taj West End. On the occasion General manager Sanjay Sood said, "Historically, Taj West End has been actively involved in promoting and hosting authors and their work. Amitav Ghosh is one of the most well known and well recognized fiction writer from India, who has a huge fan following nationally and internationally. We feel proud and delighted to have him launch is book in the Taj West End, and we aim to continue our support to art and literature wholeheartedly."

They say there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to afternoon tea, and rightly so. At the Atrium Lounge, we are pleased to present the Champagne Afternoon Tea Experience, a tribute to the quintessential mid meal indulgence fashioned by Anna Maria Russel, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford.
Bandra has always had an idyllic and romantic aura about it. Mumbai's endless clamor somehow stops at the boundaries of this eclectic suburb and the British and Portuguese colonialists seem to have left behind not just their legacy of churches but also siesta and laid-back afternoon teas. Nestled in quaint bungalows along the hushed by lanes of Bandra, you will still see the ladies of the house enjoying a tranquil midday and indulging in this time-honored tradition of afternoon tea.
At the Atrium Lounge, afternoon tea has acquired a sense of ceremony where a historical tradition meets contemporary sophistication. Our Chef's passionately craft only the most decadent confections and the most delicate savouries to serve up a spread of short eats that are accompanied by a cup of tea or a fine flute of bubbly.
The extensive buffet spread includes flaky warm savoury chicken mince turnovers, onion and corn pithivier, delicate smoked salmon finger sandwiches, english fruit cake and orange butter cake, seasonal fruit tartlets, potted ginger cream brulee, berry pannacotta shot and macadamia and chocolate cookies accompanied by homemade preserves. Our vast array of teas is quite noteworthy too, from the ubiquitous Masala Chai to a selection of exotic blends such as the Egyption Camomile, Hajua Silver Leaf Assam, Lapsong Suchong and Makaibari Golden Leaf. All this, in an ambience of understated elegance serenaded only by the sound of a soft piano.

Differentiation was getting dangerously low due to clutter within the luxury market, fierce competition from global brands, thin media budgets, and the ever-elusive luxury customer in search of new expereinces. The need of the hour was to elucidate the Taj experience in a fresh way.
In a world where "luxury" is becoming more generic, it was important to communicate the Taj portfolio and resultingexperiences - unique, authentic, rare, and tailored to each destination and each visitor; quirky, original and unpredictable, but always the ultimate in luxury - "no room for the ordinary".
The resulting campaign comprised eight advertisements on two distinct platforms: "Perspectives", capturing the precious individuality of the Taj in unusual compositions; and "Portraits", focusing on unique and successful individuals enjoying unexpected pursuits.
Within markets where the campaign was exposed, the Taj group showed impressive growth.Hide
