Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)

Also known as Dutch Palace, this generous gift from the Portuguese to the Raja of Kochi, Veera Kerala Varma in 1555 was renovated by the Dutch in 1663. The building combines European and Keralan styles, but the star attractions are the royal bedchamber's astonishingly preserved Hindu murals from the 17th to 19th centuries which depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranic legends in intricate, colourful detail.

Established in 1568, the oldest active synagogue in India and the British Commonwealth houses rare antiques, including Belgian chandeliers and hand-painted Chinese tiles. Its striking 45-feet tall 18th century clock tower is inscribed with Arabic, Hebrew, Roman and Malayalam numerals. The only one of seven synagogues in Kochi’s Jewish quarter still in operation, Paradesi is home to a 10th-century copper plate that served as an official document granting Anjuvannam to the Jews and an ornate rug that was gifted by Hailie Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia.
